Junique Siljeur's Entrepreneurial Spirit

We are thrilled to share the remarkable story of Junique Siljeur, an 11-year-old Grade 6 learner at Pebbles Academy, who is making waves with her entrepreneurial spirit.

Junique has embarked on an impressive journey by starting her own small business, creating and selling handmade jewellery, including beautiful earrings and beaded bracelets.

Junique's passion for jewellery-making was sparked by her mother, who works on the Spookfontein farm and crafts jewellery in her spare time. Inspired by her mother’s creativity and guidance, Junique learned the art of making beaded bracelets and earrings, transforming it into a fun and fulfilling activity. Since launching her business in July, Junique has crafted an impressive 56 bracelets and continues to experiment with new designs.

Her business, promoted through Facebook, WhatsApp, and word of mouth, has been thriving. Junique’s dedication and enthusiasm are evident in her work, and she even creates customised pieces, such as a special bracelet for her teacher’s daughter with her name on it. Her peers at school have shown great support for her venture, further fuelling her drive.

On 2 September, Junique proudly showcased her creations at the Pebbles Academy Market Day, an event that celebrates the talents and hard work of the learners. This milestone event provided Junique with a significant opportunity to share her jewellery with the school community and gain further recognition for her efforts.

Junique’s parents are incredibly proud of her accomplishments. "My parents are very proud of my small business," Junique says with a smile. She enjoys making jewellery every day after school, once she’s completed her homework. The joy she derives from her craft is palpable, and she reinvests the profits from her sales into purchasing new materials for her business.

Junique’s story is a testament to the power of passion, creativity, and perseverance. We are immensely proud of her achievements and excited to see where her entrepreneurial journey will lead her next.

We’re collecting used mountain bikes for the Pebbles Hemel-en-Aarde Education Project. Your donation will provide learners attending the Pebbles Academy the opportunity to enjoy cycling and stay active.

How You Can Help:

Check Your Garage - If you have a used mountain bike that you’re no longer using, consider donating it.
Contact us - Contact us to arrange collection/delivery of the bike. Contact Madelein at madelein@pebblesproject.co.za

On Wednesday the 14th of August Pebbles hosted a Career Open Day in Citrusdal with the aim to familiarise the 4-5 year old learners with key people in the Citrusdal community, such as the local librarian, the fire brigade, traffic department and police.

These individuals were invited to speak with the learners about their professions and provided informative demonstrations thoroughly enjoyed by all.

We would like to thank Citrusdal Fire Department, Traffic Department, Library, EMS, Badisa Citrusdal, Johan Zimri Community Development and Mouton Citrus clinic for making the day so memorable.

At just 19 years old, Gershwin's path to personal and professional growth with Pebbles Project is nothing short of inspiring. Born and raised in Melkbosstrand, Gershwin is one of three siblings.

Gershwin faced an initial setback after missing the submission deadline for college enrolment after finishing high school. However, fate intervened through a distant relative who resides on Koopmanskloof Winery who introduced him to Pebbles Project.

Gershwin joined the Pebbles Project Youth Development Centre in Stellenbosch in 2023, where he found a new sense of belonging and stability. The pivotal moment arrived when Pebbles Project was offered an opportunity to enroll a beneficiary in an IT course. Recognizing Gershwin's enthusiasm and potential, he was nominated for the rigorous one-year IT Technical Support course, accredited by MICT SETA and delivered by Torque Technical Computer Training (Pty) Ltd.

Reflecting on his experience, Gershwin acknowledged the initial challenges of grasping the theory aspect of the course, but found his stride through hands-on application during a practical internship at Pebbles Project's head office. Working closely with the Pebbles Project IT Officer, he gained invaluable experience that solidified his understanding of IT fundamentals. Gershwin cherishes the supportive environment at Pebbles Project, describing it as a second family where he feels accepted and valued.
When asked to share a special memory at Pebbles Project, Gershwin gives a heartfelt response: “There are too many, it’s tough to choose just one. I really enjoy being at Pebbles. I feel very proud to be here.”

When asked about his dreams for the future, Gershwin says that: “I would like to pursue further studies in IT, but also explore my passion to become an Architect.”
Gershwin is proud of his journey thus far. His family is just as proud. He says that: “My Mom loves to brag about how far I’ve come and my hope is that my journey will inspire my younger brother.”

As Gershwin himself passionately asserts: "Pebbles is like family to me. They've made me feel included, part of a team. I feel like I truly belong here.”
